If you can only be told one thing, it is this: stay in Ibiza Town on your first trip. It is walkable, it has the island's best restaurants at every price point, and it is where everything connects — the buses, the taxis, the Formentera ferry and the airport.
The town splits into recognisable pieces. The port is expensive and good for people-watching. Dalt Vila, inside the Renaissance walls, is where to stay for a view and quiet. The streets behind the market are where the town actually eats, at half the port's prices. Figueretes, a fifteen-minute walk south, is the budget option with a beach attached. Marina Botafoch across the water is polished, well-connected by taxi and slightly lifeless.
For nightlife, Pacha is a walk from most of the town and Lío is on the marina. Hï and Ushuaïa are a €12–18 taxi, and Amnesia €20–25 — so you have every option without living underneath any of them.
The trade-off is beaches. Ses Salines is fifteen minutes by car and twenty-five by bus, and the west-coast calas are a proper drive. If your week is mostly sand, this is the wrong base.
Who should stay here
Book it if: First-time visitors, anyone not hiring a car, people who care about food, and couples who want to walk to dinner and a bar rather than plan transport around both.
Stay elsewhere if: Beach-first trips — the good calas are all a drive away — and anyone on a tight budget, because this is the most expensive place on the island to sleep.

From Ibiza Town you can walk home from Pacha (€45–70). That is worth real money over a week: the taxi home from an inland club runs €25–45 each way, and doubles in the 04:00 queue.
