The interior and north

The island's best accommodation is inland: restored farmhouses, usually eight to sixteen rooms, thick whitewashed walls, olive trees, a pool, and a kitchen cooking what the garden produced that morning. Santa Gertrudis, Sant Josep, Sant Llorenç, Sant Joan and Sant Mateu are the villages to look at, and the north coast around Portinatx and Sant Vicent adds sheltered swimming.

This is also the version of Ibiza that has nothing to do with the season. In February there is almond blossom and €80 hotel rooms. In August there is silence at midnight fifteen minutes from a room where four thousand people are dancing.

The car is non-negotiable, and it changes the shape of the day. Everything is fifteen to thirty minutes away, which is fine, except that in August a twenty-kilometre drive can take over an hour and somebody has to stay sober. Amnesia and DC-10 are the closest clubs and the Discobus does reach San Rafael, but a finca week and three club nights do not combine well.

What you get in exchange is the thing most people remember: somewhere to be at three in the afternoon when going anywhere at all is a mistake.

Who should stay here

Book it if: Couples, groups renting a villa, anyone on a second or third visit, and people who want the island's best accommodation. This is where the good places actually are.

Stay elsewhere if: Anyone without a car, anyone planning multiple club nights, and first-timers with four days — you will spend a lot of that time driving.

Which clubs you can actually walk to

Nothing is walkable from The interior and north, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Every club night here means a taxi at €35–60 depending on the village, and hard to get after 02:00. book by app before you leave. or the €4 Discobus while it is still running. For one big night in a week that is fine; for three, budget an extra €120 and consider Playa d'en Bossa instead.

Getting around from here

Car: Essential, without qualification. Buses thin out markedly north of Sant Joan and do not serve the tracks the good places sit on.

Taxi to Ibiza Town: €35–60 depending on the village, and hard to get after 02:00. Book by app before you leave.
